Lagos State commissioner for Education has disclosed that the Lagos State Government can’t unilateral reopen schools.
The commissioner disclosed this in an interactive session called ‘Covinspiration show,’ which was moderated by an United Nations (UN) Youth Ambassador, Dayo Israel in Lagos.
Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Folashade Adefisayo said the government of the state can’t unilateral reopen school without the federal government approval.
She went ahead to say that the state government has been meeting with the federal government on the decision to reopen academic activities.
Adefisayo said the state’s and the federal ministry of education has been in close alliance to design an acceptable policy which must be adopted before school can reopon.
“We are watching the behaviour of the pandemic to see what happens next and we are working with the Federal government on the reopening of the schools in the country as soon as possible.
“This is not a decision that any state can unilaterally take on its own. If we are certain that the children are safe, we will reopen the schools for learning to resume.” She added.

Still speaking further, the commissioner said the federal ministry of education is working hand in hand with NCDC on guidelines that are adoptable.
“We are already working with the Federal Ministry of Education and they are working with National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) on the guidelines that could be adopted when the need arises for the schools to reopen.” She said.
“After the protocol is completed and health officials assured us that the coast is clear, we will give the schools some days to adjust their premises in accordance with the guidelines on commencement of academic activities”. She concluded.
You’ll recall that Lagos State is one of the major states which are the epicenters of the pandemic.
Which is why the decision to lock down and reopen the state has solely been made by the Federal Government in which the suspension of academic activities is not excluded.
