FG declares June 12 public holiday mark democracy day

Federal government declares June 12 2020 public holiday to mark the year’s democracy day celebration.

The federal government of Nigeria has made 12 of June 2020 a public holiday to celebrate the remembrance of Nigeria’s democracy.

This was announced on Monday by the minister of interior and a former governor of Osun state, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Aregbesola, while making the announcement, congratulates all Nigerians for the entrenchment of Democratic rule in Nigeria.

He also commended the heroes of democracy for their dogged determination and sacrifice which eventually birthed Democratic Governance in Nigeria.

Furthermore, Mr. Aregbesola called on all Nigerians to continue to cherish these selfless efforts and collaborate with the President Buhari-led Administration to ensure the realization of the democratic ideals which these Patriots fought for, even at the cost of their lives.

The Minister who reassured Nigerians of the Federal Government’s commitment to battling the scourge of COVID-19 with the cooperation of all Nigerians, advised them further, to take responsibility for stopping the spread of the virus.

He emphasis the need for all Nigerians to stay safe by observing physical and social distancing, personal and respiratory hygiene, as well as other regulations issued by relevant authorities.

Recall that president Mohammadu Buhari had on June 6, 2018 pronounced June 12 of every year as Democracy day as against the usual May 29 yearly celebration.

June 12 has always been an historic day in the journey of democracy in Nigeria, it signifies the historic democraric June 12, 1993 MKO Abiola’s election.

President Buhari’s decision was to recognise the positive impact of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) leader and 1993 presidential candidate.
