Osun house of assembly approves life imprisonment for rape offenders, passed Osun Youth Development Commission establishment bill 2020 to law.
The Osun state house of assembly has taken another step in curbing the incessant occurrence of rape in the state by approving life imprisonment as punishment for offenders.
This was disclosed by the speaker of the house, Rt. Hon. Timothy Owoeye when passing the Osun Youth Development Commission establishment bill 2020 into law.
Rt. Hon. Owoeye stated that the frequent report of rape cases in Nigeria has got to an alarming state, adding that Osun state will not tolerate this indecent and barbaric act.
He therefore added that the Director of Legal for the House of Assembly shall henceforth be present at all rape related cases in Osun courts.
The speaker said;
“Osun is blessed to have enacted law that imposes stiffer sentence on perpetrators of rape. Section 358 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. 11, Laws of Osun state, 2002 prescribes a life sentence on anyone found guilty of committing rape while an attempt to commit rape attracts an imprisonment of fourteen years.
Furthermore, Owoeye spoke on the new Osun Youth Development Commission establishment bill 2020 which was passed into law at the plenary session.
The speaker said the bill, when signed into law by the governor, will enhance and encourage active participation of youths in policy making, youth related programs, as well as other important government activities.
He also added that the law will harness and develop the full potential of the youth in the state as partners in development and progress.
