Rape: Osun begins teaching women self defense skills

– Osun begins teaching women self defense skills to prevent then from rape, chooses martial art.

The government state of Osun has taken another dimension in their fight against rape and preventing women from being victimized.

In the relentless effort by the Oyetola-led administration to to prevent the female gender from being victims of rape, the sate has decided to commence martial art training for the female genders in the state.

This information was made available to the journalists on Thursday by the Minister for Women, Children and Social Affairs in the state, Barrister Bukola Olaboopo.

Addressing the journalists, the Minister said the ministry will be working with the Osun sports council and the National Association of Women in Sport to train all girl child and women from the age of 4 years to agile women in the skill of martial art.

She said: “The training will be done every weekend by talented coaches who are committed to empowering our women.

Speaking further, Olaboopo said the aim of this training is to reduce the frequent occurrence of gender based violence, which is especially rape in the state by training the women to defend themselves from their attackers.

The legal luminary however added that the training is not entirely free as interested participants will be required to obtain an enrolment form of N500 only, this she linked to enhancing their commitment to the training processes.

She further clarified that other training materials and logistics required for the training will be provided by the state government.

Addressing the question of accessibility and dividend among all citizens of the state, the Minister said that the training is not centered only in Osogbo, she said by it will be based of Federal constituency level.

However, she added that there’s plan to take the training to local governments level as soon as there’s more facilitators.
