Fake news is detrimental to national security – T. Y. Buratai

It is no news that the menace of fake news among media practitioners, or put simply, bloggers is becoming alarmingly increasing.

But it is quite equally unfortunate that these unverified news being carried around by the bad elements in the field of online media practitioning is detriment to the security of the country.

This is what has been a major concern by the Nigerian Army and thus, the military outfit is working earnestly to curb this menace that has almost turned to a pandemic in the field of media and publicity.

Speaking on Monday at the 10th edition of the Nigerian Army-Social Media Influencers Seminar held at Osogbo, the capital city of Osun state.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai, through the Chief of Policy and Plan of the Nigerian Army, Lt. Gen. T. O. Adeosun, has encouraged the online media practitioners to desist from carrying unverified and fake news that are detrimentous to the national security.

Buratai, when giving the opening speech at the seminar tagged “Civil Military Relations: The Evolving Role of the Social Media in Support of the Nigerian Army Non-Kinetic Line of Operation” recognized the massive effect the media practitioners hold in the spread of information.

Thus, charged the media personnels to channel their energies at giving valid information as it is the basis of national security.

The only professor ever produced by the Nigerian Army lured the spread of fake news among media practitioners to the quest to always want to break news among the media practitioners.

He never failed to reiterate that these fake news are of negative consequences to the national security and as such, urged the media to always verify their news before breaking it.

Lastly, the Chief of Army Staff pleaded for the continuous support of both the media practitioners, social media influencers, civil societies and the general populace in fighting insecurity across the country.
