Makinde kicks against IGP directing the affairs of Amotekun

The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde has kicked against the plan to place Amotekun under the control of the Inspector General of Police, IGP.

The governor said on no condition will the south-western governors allow the IGP to direct the affairs of the south west security outfit under the name “Amotekun”.

Reacting to a statement credited to the presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, who said the operations of Amotekun will come under the IGP, Mr. Makinde kicked vehemently against the decision.

In a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr Taiwo Adisa, on Thursday, the governor said that the security outfit is backed by law and would no be controlled by the federal government.

Makinde said, “We want our people to sleep with their two eyes closed. Of course, security is one of the pillars of this administration and we must do everything possible to invest in the security of lives and property.

The governor, recalling their activities in recent times, said; “In Okeho the other day, armed robbers went to rob and the community rose against them and apprehended them. They combed the forests and they got them.”

He therefore stated that the security outfit is constitutionally backed, hence there’s no need for it to be controlled by the federal government.

“This is why I will continue to say it and I am saying it for the whole world to hear; Amotekun is here to stay with us. And it will not be under the control of the federal establishment. It will be under our control. Security of our people is extremely important, because nothing can take place, as far as we are concerned, in an atmosphere of insecurity.” He said.
