The 60th edition of the annual conference of the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, is scheduled to hold between 26th and 29th of August 2020.
However, the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic has prompted the organizers to plan this annual event conference in another dimension.
According to the Technical Committee on Conference Planning, TCCP, the event is scheduled to hold virtually with no less than ten (10) speakers to deliver addresses in the course of the programme.
Speakers at the event include the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, Speaker, Federal House of Assembly, Rt Hon Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon Justice Tanko Mohammed.
Other key speakers include former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Kaduna State governor, Nasir el-Rufai, Former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami, President of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association (CLA), Brian Speers and Director of Training at the Judicial Institute for Africa; Hon Dame Linda, Dobbs.
Reacting to the inclusion of Governor El-Rufai on the list of speakers at the yearly event, one of the lawyers identified as Itong Washington declared his intention to deregister from the virtual conference.
Washington took to his Twitter account to address the NBA directly as he wrote;
“Dear @NigBarAssoc, I just ran through the list of speakers in the forthcoming virtual conference and Gov. El-Rufai’s name is on the list. I’ll be withdrawing my attendance and cancelling my registration for the conference. Thank you”.
However, the lawyer refuse to state the main reason that prompted his decision to withdraw from attending the conference on seeing El-Rufai’s name on the list.
Also, the NBA as at the time of this report, is yet to respond to the call of the lawyer.
