With the global celebration of the international youth day coming up on Wednesday, 12th of August, the speaker of by the Osun State House of Assembly has charged the youths of the state to National building.
Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Kunle Alabi, the speaker of the house, Rt. Hon. Timothy Owoeye charged youths to personal development as well as nation building as the world faces an evolution brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
International Youth Day is an awareness day designated by the United Nations to draw attention to the cultural and legal issues battling youth.
The 2020 edition of the International Youth Day is tagged “Youth Engagement for Global Action” which is a call on the youths to be active rather than passive in national development.
In his address, Owoeye noted that the engagement of youth at the local, national and global levels will significantly enrich national and global development, noting that their representation and engagement in formal institutional politics should be significantly enhanced.
The speaker reiterated that it is not coincidental that the 7th Assembly of the Osun State recently passed into law, an act to establish the “OSUN Youth Development Commission.
He clarify that it was an act birthed from the need to harness and develop the full potential of youth as partners in Nation building.
Speaking further, the speaker said that the bill will charge the youths into involvement in policy making actions.
He said, “It is envisaged that the commission when established shall provide leadership in the setting of priorities and direction for all youth developmental activities.
“The Commission shall encourage and enhance state-wide active participation of the youth in all governmental and non-govermental programs, projects and activities affecting the youths.
Owoeye lamented vigorously about the alarming rate of unemployment caused by the COVID-19 pandemic as it cost thousands of Nigerian youths their job.
He therefore pledged the governments support to implement policies and laws that will gathered resources in training youths in survival jobs as the country battles with the pandemic.
