Schools’ Resumption: Osun Students Give State Government 5 Days to Announce Resumption Date for Schools

The students of Osun state under the umbrella of the National Association of Osun State Students (NAOSS), has given the Osun state government a 5 days ultimatum to announce resumption date for schools in the state.

This was contained in a statement jointly signed by the president, Salahudeen Teslim and the public relation officer of the student union body, Babawale Popoola on Sunday.

NAOSS who had initiated a protest action scheduled for Monday, 31st of August, 2020 to call on the state government to reopen schools across the state, was summoned to a meeting with the state government to resolve the matter amicably.

According to a statement released by the students body after the meeting with the state government on Sunday, the students demanded that the schools be opened with immediate effect.

Also, they demanded that necessary measures be put in place ahead the reopening of school, payment of bursery as a pandemic relief fund to the students who are indigenes of the state.

Lastly, the students demanded for a special reduction in tuition fee for citizens of the state schooling in the state-owned institutions.

However, after the long hours of deliberation chaired by the Deputy Chief of Staff, the following resolutions were reached;

1. A standing committee that will be saddled with the responsibility of putting necessary measures in place to create safe spaces for students and reopen schools will be set up with representatives of the students inclusive.

2. The said committee will begin work to reopen schools on Wednesday 2nd of September 2020.

3. The resumption date will be announced in days with the resolution of the committee.

This prompted the students to give the state government an ultimatum of 5 days to meet their demands, else the protest which was the initial plan would be embarked upon.

“As a result of the above, students of Osun who are indigenes of the 30 local governments and 1 area council hereby gives the state government of Osun an ultimatum of five (5) working days to enact the resolutions of the meeting, and reschedules Monday 7th of September 2020 tentatively for the protest if the resolutions of the meeting are not enacted.” The statement reads partly.

Meanwhile, the Osun Axis of Nation Association of Nigeria Students had already embarked on similar protest sometimes in August.

Also, the Lagos state governor has announced the resumption date for schools in the state.
