Mali Coup Leader Announce Former Defense Minister as Transitional President

Mali military junta has played a fast one on the international bodies pressurising them to chose a transitional president as the leader announced former defense Minister to take the mandate.

This was announced in a televised statement by the junta leader, Colonel Assimi Goita where he announced a former minister of defense for the country, Bah Ndaw as the transitional president.

Although, there has been several pressures from international bodies for the military junta to select a Civilian ruller, however, this will maintain a strong link between the leadership of Mali and the military.

This could be evident as the coup leader, Col. Goita declared himself the vice president.

Just seven days after the the ECOWAS gave the coup leaders to appoint a civilian president, the junta has made the declaration, empowering the military in a civilian disguise.

Nigeria News World, last week reported that, the 15-nation West Africa bloc ECOWAS last week gave Mali’s ruling officers “days” to appoint civilian leaders, warning that it would not lift sanctions on the country otherwise.

West African leaders imposed sanctions on Mali — including a trade embargo and shuttered borders — in the wake of the August 18 military coup that ousted president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.

The junta said last week that it would prefer the military to run the transition, however.

Ndaw, a 07-year-old military retiree, was appointed transition president by a committee chosen by the junta, Goita said on Monday.

“Each proposal has its advantages and its disadvantages,” he said, referring to the choice between a civilian or military president.

He added that the committee had taken “a global context” into account when picking Ndaw, which is an apparent reference to pressure from ECOWAS.

However, as at the time of this report, the ECOWAS is yet to comment or react on the choice of the junta and their appointment.
