Ondo Poll: Fire outbreak in INEC office an unfortunate occurrence - CP

Fire outbreak raze Ondo state headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Akure, the Ondo state capital on Thursday, destroying the card readers meant for the October 10 governorship election in the state.

The fire outbreak which got everyone talking has been described as an unfortunate occurrence by the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, CP Salami Bolaji.

Bolaji who expressed his displeasure in the inferno while he visited the scene on Friday, described it as an unfortunate occurrence which occurred when the election is close at hand.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the inferno destroyed no fewer than 5,141 card readers meant for the state governorship poll on Oct. 10.

According to the Commissioner, the Police command, in conjunction with INEC management and the Ondo State Fire Service, will launch an investigation into the cause of the fire outbreak.

Salami said it was regrettable that the incident happened close to the date of the governorship election in the state.

The commissioner assured all law-abiding citizens of adequate security during the poll.

He said that people should not entertain any fear as the command was fully prepared to give the state a kind of police protection never seen in Ondo State.

Salami, however, warned those harbouring criminal ideas, before, during, or after the election and electioneering campaigns, to jettison such ideas.

He said that any criminal element nab, “should be ready to sit tight at any Correctional Service detention camps in the state’’.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the All Progressive Congress of tampering with the list of electoral staff, cloning of PVCs among other electoral malpractices.
