The Rivers State Government has announced that schools in Rivers State which were closed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic can now be reopened.
According to a statement signed by its Commissioner for Information and Communications, Paulinus Nsirim, and made available to the Press, Schools in Rivers State can now be reopened from Monday, October 5, 2020.
The decision to reopen some schools in the state was reached at an emergency session presided over by the State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, on Friday September 25, 2020 at Government House in Port Harcourt.
All secondary schools, vocational schools, Universities and other Tertiary Institutions can now reopen, and except the Primary schools which were not included.
“Council also approved the setting up of a seven-man taskforce to monitor and enforce the compliance of COVID-19 protocols in the various schools”, the statement reads partly.
By the new directive, operators of Parks, Cinemas and Restaurants have now been allowed to operate from 6am – 9pm daily but must adhere strictly to the COVID -19 protocols or face severe sanctions, however, Night clubs and Bars remained closed.
For the conduct of marriages, Applications must be accompanied with an affidavit stating that there would be no wedding reception. Just as public burial ceremonies in the state are to be conducted in line with the official Gazette of the state, which stipulates that not more than 50 persons are allowed at such ceremonies.
“Families applying for burials must provide death certificate and an affidavit that they must comply with all COVID-19 protocols” the statement reads further.
Judging by the Government’s directive to the Local Council Chairmen, to ensure full compliance in their respective areas accross the entire state, it is clear that the Rivers State Government is not relenting in its fight against COVID-19, as Defaulters are required to pay a fine of One hundred Million Naira.
