#EndSARS Protest: Calm down, Oyetola tells youths as he assures government intervention

The Osun state governor, Mr. Gboyega Oyetola has spoken to address the Osun state protesters asking for an end to police brutality in Nigeria.

The governor who addressed the aggrieved youths who blocked the entrance to the governor’s office on Monday, assured the protesters of government intervention on their demands and pleaded for calm.

Youths nationwide has been calling for an end to the dissolved SARS of the Nigeria Police and reform of the entire security outfit.

In succumbing to the public demand, the Inspector-General of Police ordered the disbandment of the squad on Sunday, however the nationwide protests still persists.

This kind of protest was equally staged in Osogbo on Monday by the youths in the state, beginning from the Nelson Mandela Freedom part and rallying to the House of Assembly Complex to register their grievances.

Their demands which are not farfetched from the nationwide demands include disbandment of SARS, transparent prosecution of all erring officers, justice for the people who suffered injustice now and in the past, and an end to unjust harassment and extortion of youths by police, among others.

Having tendered their demand at the House of Assembly Complex, the aggrieved youths further took their agitations to the governor’s office, blocking the entrance and thus preventing vehicular movements.

Addressing the youths, Governor Oyetola through the secretary to the State government, Wole Oyebamiji, assured the protesters that the government is doing everything possible to assess the situation, assuring the government will communicate their demands to the appropriate channels.

He said; “We are here to tell you that we are aware of your plights as youths and as Nigerians. We have listened to your demands and we shall do everything possible within the armbit of the law to address the issues as raised one by one.

“We will present your requests to appropriate quarters as part of efforts to strengthen peace in the State. As a government, we will continue to guarantee the security of lives and property of the citizens and we shall not leave anything to chance.

“We have been maintaining and sustaining the peace. This is what we promised to do and we shall continue to do it. We appreciate the way and manner you conducted yourselves. We commend you for this peaceful demonstration”.

The governor who further reiterated his commitment to the security of lives and properties of the residents of the state, pledged his administration would go any length within the law to sustain peaceful existence in the state.
